From Rainy to Cool Season: A Mindful Reset for Life in Bangkok

Can you feel it? The heavy afternoon storms are becoming softer, and some mornings in Bangkok feel a little lighter. The city is slowly moving from the rainy season into the cool season.

This change of season is a beautiful moment to pause. Just like the weather, our bodies and minds also move through seasons. After months of rain, humidity and busy days, many of us feel ready for a gentle reset.

The season is changing

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, upper Thailand is expected to enter the cool season around the third week of October this year, and cool conditions may last until about mid February. Bangkok lows are forecast at around 19 to 21°C, a little warmer than last year (The Star, citing the TMD).

It is not cold, of course. But for Bangkok, a breeze in the morning and a lower humidity can change how we feel. It is a lovely time to walk more, sleep with the window open, and come back to a regular practice.

Ok Phansa: leaving the rains retreat

Late October is also the time of Ok Phansa (ออกพรรษา), the end of Buddhist Lent. It falls on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month. Its meaning is often described as “leaving the rains retreat,” when monks finish a long period of staying in the temple for practice (TAT News).

Whatever your own beliefs, there is something gentle we can learn from this idea. A season of staying in and looking inward comes to an end, and we step out again with fresh energy. It is a natural moment to ask: what do I want to carry into the cool months, and what can I let go?

Five ways to reset for the cool season

1. Wake up with the light

The mornings are becoming more pleasant. Try waking 15 minutes earlier and spending a few quiet minutes outside or by an open window. Notice the air, the sky, the sounds of the soi. No phone, just you and the morning.

2. Move a little every day

You do not need a long workout. A short walk, five rounds of gentle stretching, or a few sun salutations are enough. Daily movement, even small, helps the body feel awake and the mind feel clear.

3. Breathe slowly when you feel busy

When the day feels too full, stop for one minute. Breathe in through the nose for a count of four. Breathe out slowly for a count of six. Repeat five times. A longer out breath is a simple way to tell your body that it is safe to relax.

4. Clear one small space

The end of the rainy season is a good time to open cupboards, dry out shoes and bags, and give away what you do not use. Choose just one drawer or one shelf. A tidy space can bring a surprising feeling of calm.

5. Choose one intention

Instead of a long list of goals, choose one word or one small promise for the cool season. Maybe “rest,” maybe “strength,” maybe “kindness.” Write it down and put it where you will see it.

A simple evening ritual

Try this before bed, three or four nights a week:

  • Turn down the lights and put your phone in another room.
  • Sit comfortably on the floor or on a cushion.
  • Take ten slow breaths, counting each out breath.
  • Gently stretch your neck, shoulders and hips.
  • Think of one thing from today that you are thankful for.

It takes only ten minutes, but it can help the day end softly.

Listen to your body

Every body is different. Go slowly, rest when you need to, and choose what feels good for you. If you have an injury, a health condition, or you are pregnant, please check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

In Thai there is a lovely phrase, ใจเย็น ๆ (jai yen yen): keep a cool heart. This season, let the cool air remind you to keep a cool, calm heart too.
