Hatha, Vinyasa or Power Yoga: Which Yoga Style Is Right for You?

When you look at a yoga timetable for the first time, the names can feel confusing. Hatha, Vinyasa, Power Yoga… what is the difference, and which one should you choose?

The good news is that all yoga styles share the same roots. They connect movement with breath, build strength and flexibility, and help the mind feel calmer. The difference is mostly in the pace, the rhythm and the feeling of the class. This guide explains the three styles we teach at Life Studio 93, so you can choose with confidence.

Hatha yoga: slow and steady

In many modern studios, Hatha yoga means a slower class where you hold each pose for a few breaths. There is time to find your position, notice how your body feels, and adjust.

What a Hatha class feels like

  • A calm pace with clear instructions
  • Poses held for several breaths
  • Time to learn alignment and the names of poses
  • Breathing practice and relaxation, often at the start or end

Hatha may suit you if

  • You are new to yoga and want to learn the basics well
  • You like a quiet, steady class
  • You want to improve balance and flexibility slowly
  • You are coming back to practice after a break

Vinyasa yoga: flowing with the breath

The word vinyasa is often explained as “to place in a special way.” In a Vinyasa class, you move from one pose to the next in a smooth flow, with one breath for one movement. It can feel a little like a moving meditation.

What a Vinyasa class feels like

  • Continuous movement linked to the breath
  • Sun salutations and creative sequences
  • A warmer, more active body
  • A different flow from class to class

Vinyasa may suit you if

  • You enjoy movement and rhythm
  • You get bored easily when standing still
  • You already know some basic poses
  • You want a practice that feels like a dance with your breath

Power yoga: strong and energising

Power yoga is a stronger, more athletic style. It often uses flowing sequences like Vinyasa, but with more focus on strength, stamina and holding challenging poses. You will probably sweat, and you will finish feeling strong and awake.

What a Power yoga class feels like

  • A faster pace and more strength work
  • Longer holds in standing poses, planks and balances
  • A focus on core strength and stamina
  • A satisfying feeling of effort, followed by deep rest

Power yoga may suit you if

  • You enjoy a workout feeling
  • You already exercise regularly, for example running or the gym
  • You want to build strength as well as flexibility
  • You like a challenge

A quick comparison

  • Pace: Hatha is slow, Vinyasa is flowing, Power is strong and active.
  • Good for beginners: Hatha is the gentlest start. Vinyasa and Power are welcoming too, with easier options.
  • Main feeling: Hatha feels grounding, Vinyasa feels fluid, Power feels energising.

There is no wrong choice

At Life Studio 93, every class offers easier and stronger options. This means you can join any style and choose the version of each pose that suits your body today. Beginners, returners and regular students practise side by side, and small classes mean your teacher can guide you.

Some people like to mix styles during the week: a strong class one day, a flowing class another day, and a calm class when they need rest. In Thai we might say ลองดูก่อน (long duu gon): just try and see.

Tips for your first class in any style

  • Arrive about ten minutes early to settle in.
  • Wear comfortable clothes you can stretch in.
  • Eat lightly one or two hours before class.
  • Bring water, and rest whenever you need to.
  • Listen to your body. If you have an injury or a health condition, or you are pregnant, please tell your teacher and check with your doctor first.
